CONCORDIA SAGITTARIA & PORTOGRUARO

Concordia Sagittaria (18 km) - The name of Concordia comes from the ancient Roman colony Iulia Concordia, while Sagittaria refers to sagittae, the arrows that were forged here around the third century A.D. Founded in 42 B.C., it gained importance due to its strategic location, right at the intersection of the Via Annia and Via Postumia. Archeological sites: Roman remains of Via Annia and a paleochristian monumental complex of the 4th century AD in Cardinal Costantini Square. From the 1st – 3 rd centuries AD: Roman wells, floors of houses, remains of the theatre, in Via dei Pozzi Romani; the remains of the bridge in viaSan Pietro; the remains of the baths and the walls, in via delle Terme; private baths in via I Maggio. The Cathedral of Santo Stefano: stands on the early medieval basilica, which in turns was built on the early Christian basilica. The original construction dates back to the elevnth century, enlargedin the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The Baptistery in Romanesque – Byzantine style was built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Bishop’s Palace: in Venetian Gothic style, dates from the fiftheenth century.The Town Hall: of the sixteenth century, built in the Renaissance style, an ancient landing place on the river Lemene. Villa Soranzo: it was built in 1710, the Museum Roomsof the town hall with findings that tell the story of the ancient Roman colony of Iulia Concordia.

Portogruaro (20 km) - Ancient commercial port on the river Lemene, whose date of foundation is traditionally indicated in the year 1140. The old town still has its original medieval urban layout, with a clear venetian imprint in the buildings and stunning views of the river Lemene.
Places to see in Portogruaro
Gates of Sant’Agnese, San Giovanni and San Gottardo of the 12th century. The mills on the Lemene of the 12th century and the well of Pilacorte of the year 1494. The old town buildings: the municipal buildings whose middle part is of the 13th century; Muschietti Palace (15th century); Moro Palace and De Gotzen Palace (15th century); Dal Moro Palace (14-15th century); the town park, designed by Bergamasco (16th century); Degani Palace (15th century) and Marzotto Palace (16th century). Religious buildings: the neoclassical Cathedral of Sant’Andrea with Romanesque bell tower; the medieval church os Saints Cristoforo and Luigi; outside the city walls the Churches of San Giovanni and Sant’Agnese; oratory dedicated to the Madonna della Poiana (17th century); Santa Maria Maggiore abbey in Summaga (11th century); with valuable frescoes. The National Museum of Concordia is of great interest and collects the findings of the excavations of the nearby Iulia Concordia.
